In Years 2 through 6 of Pearson Science, our students have been diving into the fascinating world of Materials!
✨ Year 2 students discovered that materials can be man-made or come from nature 🌿. They explored the materials we use in everyday life and investigated their properties — soft, hard, waterproof, flexible, shiny, dull, rough, and smooth.
Using clay, students observed how materials can change over time. They shaped soft, smooth clay and watched it transform into something hard and dry — a fantastic hands-on learning experience! 🎨
Students also built bridges using everyday materials, like wooden sticks and paper cups, investigating how the properties of different materials affect strength and stability. 🌉✨
🌀 Year 3/4 students explored how materials can change shape by twisting, bending, stretching, and squeezing. They also investigated how heating and cooling can cause changes.
One highlight was making oobleck! 🤩 This special substance is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning it behaves like both a solid and a liquid. The students loved experimenting and seeing science in action!
🧈 Year 5/6 students investigated reversible and irreversible changes. We discussed how solids, liquids, and gases can change state.
A fun experiment involved making butter — starting as a liquid (cream) and becoming a solid — and understanding that it can be changed back into a liquid again. 🧑🔬
To explore irreversible change, students combined white vinegar with bicarbonate soda, producing carbon dioxide gas that inflated a balloon! 🎈 What an exciting way to see a chemical reaction happen before their eyes!
👏 All students had an amazing time investigating materials and discovering how science explains the changes happening all around us! Pearson Science is Actively Learning!
