Over the past few weeks, our Year 5/6 students have been diving into the fascinating world of micro-organisms as part of our science curriculum. We’ve been learning all about the three main types: bacteria 🦠, viruses 🧬, and microscopic fungi.
Students explored how micro-organisms can be both helpful—like those used in medicine 💊 and yoghurt 🥣—and harmful, like the ones that cause the flu 🤧 or moldy food 🍞.
To see micro-organisms in action, we conducted an experiment using bread to observe how mold grows in different environments—comparing moist conditions to dry ones. A hands-on way to understand how these tiny organisms grow and reproduce!
We also learned about basic food hygiene 🧼 and safety precautions. We wrapped up the unit by discussing the vital role of decomposers 🐛 in food chains and recycling materials ♻️. As a class, we even made our own compost 🌿 using a mix of green and brown materials—what a fun way to see science in real life!
It’s been an amazing start to our journey with Pearson Science—and there’s so much more to come. Pearson Science is Actively Learning!
